MR. TAPS
Sept. 14-18 - Choral/Dance

Ayrie King III, better known as Mr. Taps
presents the History of Tap from the slave ships
in Africa to Broadway Musicals. Using his engaging personality and fancy footwork Mr.
Taps will demonstrate the many styles of
tap dancing, from the hip-hop moves of Savion Glover to the innovative flair of Fred Astair.
During the workshop, Mr. Taps will work with students on dance steps and choreography.
CANDIE COOPER
Oct. 6-9, Jan. 5-8,Feb. 23-24 - Art

Published author and designer, Candie Cooper
will take students on an exploration to learn
about sheep, wool, and the ancient process
of wet felting which transforms raw wool into
the strong material called felt. Students
will see examples of felted pieces and then
create their own felted collage using colorful merino wool, soap and water. Students will learn to create layers in their collages by planting objects between the layers of wool before felting. These layers will then be cut away to expose
the found objects beneath. Further embellishing will be shown with a dry felting technique
called needle felting and stitching.

AARON BARKER
Nov. 4-6 - Choral


Grammy-winning Nashville songwriter Aaron
Barker conducts this interactive workshop
teaching about the song publishing business
and poetry as he works with students to
write a jingle in class.
 


This presentation is supported by the Performing Arts Fund, a program of Arts Midwest funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art, with additional contributions from Indiana Arts Commission, General Mills Foundation, and Land O’Lakes Foundation.


 
BUSELLI-WALLARAB JAZZ SEXTET
Nov. 10-12 - Instrumental Music

The Buselli-Wallarab Jazz Orchestra, co-founded by Mark Buselli and Brent Wallarab, is an Indianapolis jazz ensemble. Both men are music educators, musicians, and composers. Mark Buselli serves as director of Jazz Studies at
Ball State while Brent Wallarab teaches jazz ensemble and arranging at the
I.U. School of Music. Additionally, Brent Wallarab serves as a Jazz Specialist
for the Smithsonian in Washington DC and performs as lead and solo trombonist
for the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. School clinics will consist
of topics about jazz improvisation coupled with a history of Indiana jazz artists.
Also included will be small master classes for each instrument joined with information on warm-up, practice routines, and how to listen, along with
transcribing and arranging music. The students will be invited to play during
the clinics, and will have an opportunity to play with the Buselli-Wallarab
Jazz Sextet at the public performance on Thursday evening, November 12.

BRUCE LANGTON
Jan. 19-22, 2009 - Art

Hands-on instruction in sketching a
detailed drawing will be presented by
Bruce Langton, known internationally as
one of today’s premier contemporary artists
and children’s book illustrators. The Clark
Gallery at the Honeywell Center will present
a gallery exhibit in correlation with this residency featuring some of Mr. Langton’s children’s
book illustration artwork. Youth participating
in the school workshops will be invited to attend
a youth-focused public gallery reception.
 
 
INDIANAPOLIS OPERA
April 19-21 - Choral

The Indianapolis Opera Ensemble (Indianapolis Opera’s resident company)
presents Opera ŕ la
Carte, a program for high school students.  It consists
of scenes from a variety of operas,
some with student participation.
